MEET THE ICON OF VACATIONS
A day or two before I got off the ship, I decided to make use of my balcony, which I had avoided because I thought the view would only depress me further. This entire time, I had been living in the ship’s Disneyland, Surfside, the neighborhood full of screaming toddlers consuming milkshakes and candy. And as I leaned out over my balcony, I beheld a slight vista of the sea and surf that I thought I had been missing. The sea was frothy and infinite and blue-green beneath the span of a seagull’s wing. And though it had been trod hard by the world’s largest cruise ship, it remained. Usually the essayist commissioned to take to the sea is in their first or second flush of youth and is ready to sharpen their wit against the hull of the offending vessel.
PERFECT DAY
The Icon-Class indeed marks a significant step forward by Royal Caribbean. As the newest, largest, and most environmentally friendly in the fleet, they surpass the innovative features introduced with the Quantum Class in 2014. The primary difference between Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class and Icon-class ships lies in their carrying capacity, with Quantum-class ships accommodating over 1,000 fewer passengers. When comparing Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Icon class ships, you’ll notice similarities in their immense sizes, as they carry around 5,200 and 5,600 passengers, respectively. Classic favorites like the FlowRider surf simulator are also available for guests who enjoy action-packed experiences.

There are many reasons why Icon of The Seas℠ offers the best family vacation out there, from exceptional pools to daytime activities and rocking nightlife. Take your pick of seven different pools, plus ten whirlpools — and plunge into an all-you-can-swim buffet of splashes to satisfy every mood. All with next-level ocean views to keep you connected to the sea. And refreshing cocktails are on tap across three decks at The Lime & Coconut® bar. The story you are reading was commissioned at a moment when most staterooms on the Icon were sold out. Hence, this publication was faced with the shocking prospect of paying nearly $19,000 to procure for this solitary passenger an entire suite—not including drinking expenses—all for the privilege of bringing you this article.
There are 14 new categories that range from standard rooms to suites, including more options for families. Coastal Kitchen will be two decks high on Icon of the Seas. As part of that sneak peek, TravelPulse was invited to Royal Caribbean's Innovation Lab in Miami, where the cruise giant combines its special blend of creativity and aspiration with actual requests from guests. Icon of the Seas, along with the soon-to-come Icon class ships, are a must-experience for any and all cruise ship lovers. This ship boasts cutting-edge technology, spacious accommodations, and a variety of entertainment options. It’s impossible to experience everything in one cruise, so multiple visits might be enticing.
When Icon-class ships were initially announced in 2016, they were not expected to be larger than Oasis-class ships. The projection was for the Icon Class to have a gross tonnage of around 200,000 GT, making them approximately 10% smaller than the Oasis Class. The LNG fuel tank is 307 tons and 90 feet long, and were installed recently into one of the blocks that makes up the new ship. Royal Caribbean says the two LNG fuel takes are the largest in the cruise industry. This will be the first Royal Caribbean cruise ship to be powered by LNG. Royal Caribbean posted a new video update with the progress being made on the cruise line's next generation cruise ship.
Her face was as tight as a 19-year-old’s, she had so much surgery.” With those words, and beneath a cloudy sky, humidity shrouding our weathered faces and red necks, we set sail once again, hopefully in the direction of home. Finally, I visit a comedy revue in an enormous and too brightly lit version of an “intimate,” per Royal Caribbean literature, “Manhattan comedy club.” Many of the jokes are about the cruising life. “I’ve lived on ships for 20 years,” one of the middle-aged comedians says. “I can only see so many Filipino homosexuals dressed as a taco.” He pauses while the audience laughs. He segues into a Trump impression and then Biden falling asleep at the microphone, which gets the most laughs.
Anna Drescher, the cruise line's manager of architectural design, newbuilding and innovation calls Icon of the Seas℠ a "white-paper ship" because it began with a blank sheet of sketching paper. Despite my attempts at bridge building, the very sight of me (small, ethnic, without a cap bearing the name of a football team) elicits no reaction from other passengers. Most often, they will small-talk over me as if I don’t exist. This brings to mind the travails of David Foster Wallace, who felt so ostracized by his fellow passengers that he retreated to his cabin for much of his voyage. And Wallace was raised primarily in the Midwest and was a much larger, more American-looking meatball than I am.
When completed, Icon will be 20 decks high and 1,198 feet long and measure 250,800 gross tons. The 20-deck high ship comes in at 250,800 tons will be more than 6% bigger than Wonder of the Seas and able to hold up to 7,600 passengers. Icon of the Seas will also be 10 feet longer than Wonder of the Seas. Finally, the fifth pillar celebrated food and beverage at sea, promising to build upon the cruise line's robust collection of foodie-approved dining concepts by introducing new, never-before-seen restaurants and offerings.
Familiar dining options, such as Izumi and Chops Grille, can be found on both classes, but Icon-class ships introduce new culinary and drinking experiences with Pier 7 and a Dueling Pianos bar. In attendance at the ceremony was Richard Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group; Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International; and Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku. The initial step in the ship’s years-long journey to completion also officially begins Royal Caribbean’s next chapter in building a clean-energy future as the leader in innovative ship design.
The next stage will be laying down the keel of the ship, which nowadays means the placement of the first block in the dry dock. Large prefabricated sections are assembled in the dry dock, including the hull, engine, and superstructure. She is the sister ship to one of the most spectacular cruise ships in history, Icon of the Seas, and the second in class, Star of the Seas. The first steel is cut for Royal Caribbean's third Icon class cruise ship at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, officially starting the construction process. Each Icon ship is being designed to offer a combination of the best of every type of vacation onboard-from the resort getaway to the beach-style escape and even theme park adventure activities, according to Royal Caribbean.
As of 2019, the median income for crew members was somewhere in the vicinity of $20,000, according to a major business publication. Royal Caribbean would not share the current median salary for its crew members, but I am certain that it amounts to a fraction of the cost of a Royal Bling gold-plated, zirconia-studded chalice. Back on the Icon, some older matrons are muttering about a run-in with passengers from the Celebrity cruise ship docked next to us, the Celebrity Apex. Although Celebrity Cruises is also owned by Royal Caribbean, I am made to understand that there is a deep fratricidal beef between passengers of the two lines. “We met a woman from the Apex,” one matron says, “and she says it was a small ship and there was nothing to do.
